Also known as Tammy Blee, was the so-called ’ Witch of Helston,’and undoubtedly the greatest of the Cornish conjurors during the nineteenth-century.She was well respected by many in her time for her skills in areas of charm making, divination, healing, herb lore, necromancy and spell breaking. Tammy may even have employed ‘Shamanic’ style methods in communicating with spirits and seeing the future for she would make use of hallucinogenic substances to aid her trance induced workings.

An old Cornish folk tale called “The Ghost of Stythians” tells the tale of Tamsin Blight raising the spirit (in Stythians graveyard) of an old woman, who had recently died, for a male relative who wanted to know were she had stashed the money she was supposed to have left him. The ritual involved the construction of a charmed ring to protect the man, and a long, slowly-pronounced incantation. She then appealed to the spirits of Fire, Air, Earth, and Water, and amid strange sounds of crashing and rending of wood and stones, mingled with painful moans, groans and shrieks, which seemed to come from the old woman’s grave, the spirit of the dead woman was raised and questioned.

Marie Laveau (September 10, 1782 – June 16, 1881)

Laveau was a Creole practitioner of Voodoo born and renown in New Orleans.

Her daughter Marie Laveau II (1827 — c. 1895) also practiced Voudoun, and historical accounts often confuse the two. She and her mother had great influence over their multiracial following. “In 1874 as many as twelve thousand spectators, swarmed to the shores of Lake Pontchartrain to catch a glimpse of Marie Laveau II performing her legendary rites on St. Jon’s Eve (June 23–24).

There are stories that her ghost appeared to walk the streets of Burslem apologising for her sins. Further stories claim that her spirit was exorcised by a group of several priests and that while it was successful, some of them died in the process.

Although Crowley, who grandly claimed to be the Devil’s representative on earth, died in 1947, the house continues to be the subject of some supernatural debate, with visitors there often complaining of feeling a strange and sinister atmosphere.

“Modern morality and manners suppress all natural...

“Modern morality and manners suppress all natural instincts, keep people ignorant of the facts of nature and make them fighting drunk on bogey tales.”
